The Role

The Controller position is a hands-on role, responsible for implementing processes and systems for our clients - including mapping out needs, choosing a system, and setting up, and implementing the system.
Your Typical, Atypical, Day
This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to overseeing monthly
and yearly financial closes, no day will be a typical day (hence the typical, atypical day).You will be supporting our startup clients who need Controller help but may not have a
need for an internal team at their growth stage (usually we work with Seed through
Series C clients). So, there is always a lot of work to be done!You’ll be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate,
prioritize, and evaluate needs is the most important thing you’ll be doing in this role.You’ll be managing accountants and processes for our clients and possibly internally to
Burkland, too, so you’ll want to have a background in managementEmbracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is a must.

The Role
Burkland Associates is looking for an ERP Implementation Specialist to join our Accounting & Finance practice. This is an individual contributor role for experienced ERP professionals who thrive on building scalable financial infrastructure for high-growth startups.
You will facilitate ERP implementations, configurations, and optimizations across our client base and work closely with founders, CFOs, and internal team members. Our current core platforms include NetSuite and Rillet, with exposure to other modern finance tools across the startup tech stack. This is a unique opportunity to bring deep ERP expertise to some of the most innovative companies in software, biotech, and beyond.
Your Typical, Atypical, Day
Implementation & Configuration — Own end-to-end ERP implementations for Burkland clients, including chart of accounts design, module configuration, workflow automation, and user acceptance testing. Document implementation decisions and maintain project trackers throughout each engagement.
System Assessment & Optimization — Evaluate existing ERP environments and identify gaps, inefficiencies, or misconfigurations. Recommend and execute improvements to reporting structures, dashboards, and custom workflows to align the system with each client's business model. Deliver training sessions, create user documentation, and proactively surface system improvements that align with client growth milestones
Accounting Operations & Close Support — Support the monthly close process within client ERP systems including journal entries, reconciliations, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and financial reporting. Ensure the system accurately reflects the client's accounting policies and audit requirements.
Integrations & Data Migration — Manage data migrations from legacy systems (QuickBooks, Xero, spreadsheets) into modern ERP platforms. Collaborate with tech and product teams to scope and oversee third-party integrations (Stripe, Brex, Ramp, Salesforce, etc.) using native automation tools or iPaaS solutions.
Process Improvement & Technology — Identify opportunities to streamline financial workflows through automation and cross-functional collaboration. Stay current with platform releases, best practices, and the evolving startup finance tech stack.
About You
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
3-5+ years of progressive ERP implementation or administration experience
Hands-on experience leading or supporting full-cycle ERP implementations (not just end-user experience)
Strong foundation in GAAP accounting, month-end close, and financial reporting
Ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously and reprioritize as needed
Excellent written and verbal communication skills where you can translate technical system decisions into plain language for non-technical founders and finance teams
Self-directed and proactive: comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-moving startup environments
Excited to support clients in SaaS, fintech, biotech, and other high-growth industries
Core Competencies
Hands-on experience with NetSuite and/or Rillet; familiarity with other modern ERP or accounting platforms is a plus
Experience with core ERP modules: GL, AR, AP, Fixed Assets, Multi-Book Accounting, Advanced Revenue Management, and/or similar equivalents across platforms
Familiarity with workflow automation, scripting, or integration tooling native to your platform(s) of expertise
Experience integrating ERP systems with SaaS billing, payroll, CRM, or expense tools
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets for data analysis and reconciliation
ERP Administrator or Consultant certification preferred (NetSuite, Rillet, or equivalent)

The Role
We are looking for a Sr. Tax Associate, R&D to support our in-house R&D tax offering. In this role, you will conduct and document technical interviews with clients and subject matter experts, perform tax research, and prepare R&D tax credit and Section 174/174A analyses in accordance with applicable standards.
You will own day-to-day responsibilities on assigned engagements, support technical execution, and collaborate closely with team members to help deliver high-quality client work. This is a fully remote role in a multi-client environment, where you will balance several engagements at once and contribute to a growing, collaborative team.
Your Atypical, Typical Day
Manage day-to-day responsibilities for assigned R&D tax credit and Section 174/174A engagements.
Conduct virtual client interviews to document activities relevant to the R&D credit.
Draft technical reports based on client interviews and supporting documentation.
Prepare and review workpapers, deliverables, and tax forms.
Identify R&D opportunities by analyzing client financial statements and tax documents.
Prepare and review R&D credit calculations, including Section 174/174A considerations, for client delivery.
Support junior team members by answering questions, sharing technical guidance, and reviewing work as needed.
Assist with engagement budgeting, billing, and other administrative responsibilities to support timely delivery.
Participate in IRS phone meetings with clients as needed, acting under appropriate authority.
Balance multiple client engagements and priorities while communicating clearly and promptly with the team.
Support technical R&D research and contribute to internal knowledge development.
Assist with business development activities, including contributing to proposals for prospective and existing clients.
Stay current on tax law and regulatory developments related to the R&D credit.
About You
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
3–5 years of experience in R&D tax, with hands-on responsibility for R&D tax credit and Section 174/174A analyses.
CPA, EA, or progress toward either preferred
IRS client representation credential is a plus.
Experience with Kipsi R&D tax software is a plus, as is experience with Alteryx or Power BI.
Experience supporting or mentoring junior staff is preferred.
Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, with experience working across multiple data sources.
Self-motivated and comfortable working independently in a fully remote environment.
Technical understanding of software and/or biotechnology industries, with comfort speaking with technical leads about R&D activities.
Ability to translate accounting concepts for technical audiences.
Working knowledge of accounting methods is a plus.
Strong computer skills, including Google Workspace, Slack, and the ability to quickly learn new software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously while meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work.
Strong analytical, research, organizational, and communication skills, with sharp attention to detail.
Genuine passion for delivering exceptional client service, as this role involves extensive client interaction.
Comfortable working in a fully remote, camera-on culture, confidently leading and facilitating meetings via Google Meet or Zoom.
