The Role

Your Typical, Atypical, Day
The Director of Income Tax is responsible for applying industry-specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues.
In this role, the Director of Income Tax is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, and recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies.
In addition, you will be a critical member of the leadership team and thus will be involved in direct supervision as either a final or secondary reviewer.
Finally, you will actively participate in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships.
About You
Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Tax, or Finance.
MAcc (Master's of Accounting) or MST (Master’s of Taxation) degree preferred.
At least 10 or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
Strong managerial, supervisory, and decision-making skills to direct staff daily to achieve department and client goals.
CPA certification required, or Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction).
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to compose written tax advice.
Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationship
Ability to delegate work properly, follow-up, and resolve problems firmly and equitably.

The Role

The Controller position is a hands-on role, responsible for implementing processes and systems for our clients - including mapping out needs, choosing a system, and setting up, and implementing the system.

This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to overseeing monthly and yearly financial closes, no day will be a typical day (hence the typical, atypical day).
You will be supporting our startup clients who need Controller help but may not need an internal team at their growth stage (usually we work with Seed through Series C clients). So, there is always a lot of work to be done!
You’ll be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs is the most important thing you’ll be doing in this role.
You’ll be managing accountants and processes for our clients and possibly internally to Burkland, too, so you’ll want to have a background in management.

The Role
The Fund Accounting Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance for investment funds. This role ensures accurate fund accounting, investor reporting, and regulatory adherence while optimizing financial processes. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in fund structures, GAAP reporting, and financial controls and is comfortable working with VCs, private equity firms, or other investment entities.

Fund Accounting & Financial Reporting
Oversee daily, monthly, and quarterly fund accounting processes, ensuring accurate NAV calculations and financial statements.
Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements, investor capital accounts, and fund-level reporting.
Ensure accurate allocation of income, expenses, and carried interest across fund structures.
Manage intercompany transactions, capital calls, distributions, and waterfall calculations.
Collaborate with external auditors and tax advisors to support year-end audits and tax compliance.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Design and implement internal controls to safeguard fund assets and maintain financial accuracy.
Ensure compliance with SEC, IRS, and investor reporting requirements for fund entities.
Monitor regulatory changes affecting fund structures and accounting practices.
Maintain SOX-compliant internal processes for fund operations, if applicable.
Investor Relations & Fund Operations
Provide timely investor reporting, including capital calls, distributions, and quarterly investor statements.
Support fund managers with financial analysis, fee structures, and carried interest modeling.
Maintain LP communications and investor capital account records to ensure transparency.
Work closely with fund administrators and custodians to streamline reporting processes.
Strategic Process Improvement & Technology Optimization
Implement automation and process efficiencies for fund accounting workflows.
Evaluate and optimize fund accounting systems and reporting tools.
Develop standardized reporting packages for fund managers, investors, and auditors.
Lead process improvements for faster financial close cycles and enhanced data accuracy.
