The Role

Your Typical, Atypical, Day
Working largely independently, apply knowledge, experience, insight, and competence to partner strategically with clients in various industries such as Fintech, Crypto/Blockchain/NFT, SaaS, Consumer, and Healthcare.
This role has variety at its core. From presenting at investor meetings to building financial models for clients, no day will be a “typical day” (hence the typical, atypical day).
You will help bridge the gap between legacy financial thinking and new blockchain-based ecosystems, functions and capital flows.
You will be supporting our startup clients who need high-level finance help but may not have a need for a full-time internal CFO at their current stage.
You will be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate, prioritize and evaluate needs is the most important thing you’ll be doing in this role.
You will be managing the entire Finance function for your clients, so you’ll want to be comfortable managing a team.
You will have the opportunity to build out robust processes and systems for our clients. So understanding + embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is a must.

You understand current financial, regulatory & tax landscape, and are passably familiar with the jurisdictional complexities of organizations in this space.
You have a love for all things high-level finance. For example, you should be able to work through the following:
You can lead client fundraising efforts – evaluating the size of a fundraising round, model cap table scenarios/dilution, assist with pitch deck preparation, facilitate investor introductions, and participate in investor pitches.
You can design the Finance function from the ground up. This includes building out team structures, implementing systems, and developing processes.
You can drive comprehensive reporting of financial performance, metrics, and KPIs.
You have strong finance-based modeling & analytical skills.
You can seamlessly juggle hard-hitting CFO deliverables while building strong client relationships.
You have a solid working knowledge of Excel/Google Sheets, Carta, QBO, etc. You’re comfortable using Zoom and other video conferencing tools to facilitate client meetings.

You’ll be working fully remotely! So, whether in pajama pants and a button-down or taking calls at a coffee shop, you design where and how you work each day. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CIMA Qualification preferred.
At least 3-5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a startup environment.
Experience using QuickBooks Online.Bonus points if you have experience using the classes feature of QBO.
Proficiency in learning and adapting to new systems.
Experience working remotely and developing strong team relationships based on trust and accountability.
Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.

The Role
Our team’s Bookkeeper will be responsible for client financial statements, bookkeeping, accounting software management, and journal entries. The role will involve day-to-day tasks related to maintaining accurate financial records, reconciling accounts, processing payments, and generating financial reports.
A Day in the Life
Performing bookkeeping and general accounting services for clients.
Completing and reviewing month-end work (reconciliation of bank accounts, post cash receipts and cash disbursements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, calculating and recording monthly accruals, recording journal entries, preparing financial statements, reviewing G/L detail to be sure sufficient information is provided for preparation of year-end returns).
Maintaining positive client relationships.
Responding timely and accurately to internal team and client requests.
You're the perfect fit for us if…
You have or are in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or something similar, or 2-3 years of progressive experience.
Experience with financial statements, bookkeeping, and accounting software such as QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, and Xero.
Strong knowledge of bank reconciliations.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills

The Role
We are looking for a dynamic + strategic teammate at Burkland. If you have a background as a Controller and a passion for helping venture-backed startups succeed, Burkland is a wonderful fit for you!
The Controller position is a hands-on role, responsible for implementing processes and systems for our clients - including mapping out needs, choosing a system, and setting up, and implementing the system.

This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to overseeing monthly and yearly financial closes, no day will be a typical day (hence the typical, atypical day).
You will be supporting our startup clients who need Controller help but may not have a need for an internal team at their growth stage (usually we work with Seed through Series C clients). So, there is always a lot of work to be done!
You’ll be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs is the most important thing you’ll be doing in this role.
You’ll be managing accountants and processes for our clients and possibly internally to Burkland, too, so you’ll want to have a background in management.
Embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is a must.
